The inaugural golf outing of the Highland Dark Blues was held on Friday
18th July, at Torvean golf course, Inverness, to allow members to have a wee
social get together in the long, barren football-less spell between the heh,s
of Hampden and the anticipation of the new season to come .
With the forecast looking a bit ominous we were fortunate to get round in mild
and pleasant conditions, that however was to change dramatically come lighting
up time at the barbi.
Some of the “fitter” members had arranged a fehv a side gemme prior
to golf but this was to be their undoing when stamina was required later in
the golf round, John “the Elder” Huband proving to be our fittest
member having played fehv a side he proceeded to play two rounds of golf, (or
at least enuff shots to constitute two rounds) he was delighted, however to
find his prez for this monumental achievement was a bottle of our sponsors finest
cider to go alongside his recently acquired Magners glasses
Out on the course Jamie MacKay set of with youthful
exuberance hitting balls further than I go my holidays, but guile and experience
came thru in the end with Jack Lornie narrowly beaten into second place by yours
truly (its just coincidence I was doing the scoring, Honest!!!) while it took
a count back of the last six holes to separate Jamie and Ian Swayne for third
place. Mark and Spud Kerr we’re a picture of sartorial elegance in their
long shorts, Spud being spotted on parts of the course not really intended for
the playing of the royal and ancient game. Derrick Steel chipped in at the last
for a birdie and demanded we go out again as he was “just getting going”,
while Ian Addison got a net hole in one at the eighth, we’re still waiting
for the round Ian!!
Big thanks to our sponsors “Royal bank of Scotland “for goodie bags,
cheers Derick, also Mark and Graham for prezzes kindly donated.
After the gowf it was off to Muirton (no not 1962 Muirton) but Johns residence
for more drinks and THE barbi, with the sort of timing that only the vagaries
a highland summer can produce, the heavens opened just as the words “shall
we light the barbi” were uttered .Not to be daunted by a “wee”
shower, the Highland Dees carried on regardless, sheltering under brollies as
smoke engulfed the entire Muirton area, filled Johns hoose and brought neebors
out to see where the fire was. It was all worthwhile though as the aroma of
burgers, sausages, spare ribs and kebabs(not a gammon steak in site)filled the
air, and a token plate of salad was tossed, to kid on we were healthy eaters.
The beer flowed and Phil Harper's video fae the Hampden day out was produced
to relive memories, excellent viewing up to the point Phil left it filming the
inside of his holdall for two hours, still it was great to see the trip down
again.
At this point myself and Derick were filling up with beer and decided to miss
the optional trip to Foxes and head home after a great day out, cheers to John
for hospitality, hope you,s have all recovered and we,ll see you all again next
year.
Bring on the new season !!
