MEN WITH ODD SHAPED BALLS!!

For the 2008 Highland Dark Blues golf outing it was decided for wee change, to try out the new Golf Cross at Loch Ness Golf course along with 9 holes of "normal" golf .Golf cross is a new idea based on using golf clubs to hit wee rugby ba shaped golf balls into nets at varying lengths.According to the blurb, the ba's only go straight and you can't lose them !!! AYE RIGHT!!!!! They obviously hadnae envisaged the HDB's annual sojourn on to the fairways of the north.

Jabba is bemused wi the odd shaped ba's

8 enthusiastic swingers gathered on the first tee to give the new game a whirl with Garry instantly losing the first ba of the day wi the first tee shot . So much for it being "impossible" to lose a ball at this game!! Garry, however, would later prove to be a fast learner when it comes to "net" scores with the shot of the day , but more on that later.....

Golf crosss was proving a little tricky to pick up with the first hole taking a bout 25 minutes to negotiate and me leading my fourball doon the wrong hole for the second (it used to be the next hole, honest lads!) ,if this sort of time scale continued on every hole it would take about 8 hours to complete the round and wi the wifie's ladies turning up for denner lunch we'd no be affy popular,so it was decided to revise the rules wi fowk picking up if more than 2 shots over par.But as we practiced and got the hang of the game proceedings speeded up and by the time we got to the 6th Garry proceeded to show us all how to do it with a magnificant "Net" in one!!!

Just as a'body was starting to get a grip of the new fangled game it was over and after a swift pint (for some) it was straight back on the tee for 9 holes of "normal" golf. Some good golf was played over the short 9 holer with Iain Addison showing his potential and Garry's new found confidence from his net score seeing some decent shots, but after all the scores were inputtted (is that a word?) into the computer and handicaps taken off there was only going to be one winner and Innes (Tig) Macleod was duly crowned the HDB's Golf champion of 2008.

So with the golf done and dusted, we moved swiftly on to the bar and awaited the arrival of the ladies.Sitting out side basking in glorious sunshine the conversation was of huge booming drives and 30 footers that just slipped by,(someone mentioned that Jabba missed his little tiddler, but thats another story!)

With the golf feenishd and the beers slipping down well, we moved on to the other sporting event of the day with Pentanque arranged for a bit of wifie participation. No one realised the potential of the Kerr partnership and Mark's worryingly deft limp wrist proved astonishly accurate, ably backed up by his good lady Catriona, the Kerrs swept all before them, culminting in a hugely exciting and rivetting final(OK,OK) between themselves and the Hopkins duo.

With the sporting activities done for the day we moved inside for a leisurly late afternoon dinner, superbly served and presented by the efficient Fairways staff and eagerly devoured by the ravenous participants.with coffee and bicuits oot the way their was a minor stampede for the guid seats for the evenings fitba with Euro 2008 starting. "Aw naw, we come oot for a nice day and you lot want to watch fitba" bemoaned some of the ladies.Ah well , you know how it is girls!

After a couple more drinks folk started heading off into the night ,some having other evening engagements, leaving the hard core rear gaurd propping up the bar to discuss the merits or otherwise of Europes finest fitba players and which ones would get a place in the Dees first team

So another golf day oot passed succesfully, thanks to all for your participation , Carnoustie or St Andrews next year?????
