HDB'S OPEN 09

Where does the time go???,hardly seems a couple of months since the last HDB golfin sojourn and here we are again a hale year later!!! After discussions with the troops, it was felt last years formula of the nine holer at Fairways (but withoot the Golf cross thrown in!!) and Petanque with drinks efter was a great succes and was to be repeated this year,so we found oorselves on the hottest day of the year venturing out onto the short but testing "wee" course at Fairways. With handicaps for previous winners suitably amended to give all a fair shout at the coveted HDB's Qauich, the dirty dozen assembled at the bar for coffee and bacon butties before forming an orderly rabble at the first tee.

Derek,Amy and Spud get set to lead the way..................................

Followed by a confident Garry,Iain and mystery guest.................

InnesMac and Cahirman try to hide John's legs wi their clubs!!

Eh OK, eh ken!!!!

So, with abody tee'd off and Connel still bitching about no getting enough shots and it was a stitch up coz he was an ICT fan really, but had to keep his Faither in la' sweet, we headed off in search of birdies and eagles.

Despite the soaring temperatures, some very good golf (and some not so good)was being played and by the time we stopped for half way beverages,it was clear there we're two players emerging ahead of the field. So, with all to play for,Innesmac and Cahirman Mark Kerr led us back onto the fairways to sort out who was to be this this year's HDB undisputed champine followed by the rest of us,when we managed to prise John,Addo and Garry away from having "just another quick pint of heavy"

Connel practices his keepy uppy while Mike contemplates if there is space in the bag for some beer

Innesmac's challenge to retain the coveted Qauich ends in a watery grave.....................

..............and Cahirman starts to look confident

Before finishing stronly on 43 points to Innesmacs 40 and collecting the precious Prehz!!!

(yer handicap will be amended acordingly for next year Mark )

Worthy Winner Mark Kerr with the HDB Qauich and winners trophy

After soup and pieces, the awards ceremony was carried out and although there was nae green jacket available,a glittering array of prizes was presented to the participants who had managed to achieve a place in the top 12. John Hubband finally passed on the wooden spoon after managing to hang on to it tenaciusly for several years and Garry was bemoaning his points total with " Eh thought eh hud loads mare than that"! Sorry Garry, ya dinnae get mair points for hitting the ba mair times................and so we moved on to the second sporting event of the day as the ladies and families arrived for the Petanque

Some of the ladies enjoy a drink...................

Whilst the "heavy" boys show how Petanque should be played

Spud and family keep a close eye on Derek "Dead eye" Steel's technique

The Taylor clan enjoying the day oot

And so it proved the "Heavy" boy's, made up of Garry, John and Addo swept all comers before them to wrestle the coveted title of HDB's top Petanquers away from last years champeens, the Kerrs.

Spud is Deelited with his HDB fixture list for the coming season.

And so another great day in the company of fellow Dee's in the Highlands drew to a close, with the heavy boys heading into town for "just a quick one".I contemplated heading in myself, but one withering look from Mrsmac told me perhaps beer levels were already full enough and i'd probly get there and fall asleep and she wisnae coming to get me (funny how they can say all that wi just one look eh!1) so i resigned myself to heading homewards.

Great to see so many Kerrs in attendance with Spud and his lovely family travelling up from Dundee for the day, also big well done to Amy Taylor for coming out and playing, haveing never swung a club in her life, and dad Mike who hadnae hit a ba for many years, both aquiited themselves very well.Jabba edged out Connel in his quest for family bragging rights, whilst Derek on home turf failed to reach the high standards previously set by himself (but that may have been something to with walking miles in support of the highland cross the day before)

Looking forward to next year folks

Awa the Dee
